Welcome to Freedom! The original 150 Poke'mon were a big part of my childhood, as I've played a lot of Poke'mon yellow. I've also played a few generations after that, but the 150 are definitely my favorite.

Honestly, my best tip for you would be to not expect to "get big." Placing expectations in what you do will cause you to hate doing it, especially if you don't see the results you like. Do it solely because you enjoy doing it.
