How do you pick the people you collab with?

Finding people to work with isn't an issue, but quality is another matter entirely! I always fear the day when I need to reject somebody due to circumstances. Having the skill set to decline people is a great boon to have.

How do you pick the people you work with? Are you more carefree, or do you have guidelines/criteria that must be met?

*Knowing them before recording. (LtGeneralStoreGaming)
*Having mutual chemistry. (Phil Kidd)
*Considering audio quality. (Phil Kidd)
*Friendships. (Stelgim)
*You enjoy their content. (Koala_Steamed)
*Works with your age requirement. (Enmoshin)
*Makes plans in advance. (Enmoshin)

I've only collabed once. I tried to talk to the person for a little to see if our personalities work together. I also check out their channel to see what kind of videos they post.
I sometimes feel bad when our personalities don't mesh well. Rejection is the worst! I'm mostly cultured with not swearing since I have kids that watch me on the odd occasion.

A very good question to address, I've seen many on this forum jump into missmatched collaborations because they're desperate for a bit more attention.

The best collaborations are born out of mutual necessity and chemistry. I personally look for someone doing similar content with the same dedication and zeal. Audio quality is something i consider as well, because you're video will be limited by the lowest quality partaking. If that makes sense.

I usually talk with someone several times before committing to a collab, and i don't jerk people around with the hope that it will happen. It's important to be straight with people if you don't see something you like.

No doubt. Pre-screening people tends to be the safer route.

Especially for audio, your video will suffer due to your partner's setbacks. I understand suffering some bits here & there, but a limit shouldn't be crossed by a huge margin.

Being direct is nice, and not stringing people along would be better long term. I'll keep note of that indeed, because if we can't say no to a single person, getting taken advantage of in the future will be easier and easier. Thanks for the input Phil, I appreciate your perspective ^^

I tend to mostly collab with people from the same group as me(friends), I think the chemistry is ok between all of us. The amount and who is in each session is random though, the humour can get different depending on which mix of people is online.

Haven't dared to collaborate with some other YouTubers yet, mostly due to my inexperience talking to others. So I guess my choice is really simple.

That's the best way to do it honestly. A strong connection will outshine everyone else compared to a small chat with people you don't know :p Although, in time, a lot of connections can be built, some take longer than others, and some are risky as well.

Working with others can be very educational too ^^ I just feel awful if I don't upload the video, or have the quality lacking.

I don't do collaborations, but I think it would have something to do with a similar personality type.

Too often, I see people come onto these forums trying to collaborate for the purpose of collaboration.
If I were to collaborate, it would be with and only with people I would whole-heartedly call my friend. Someone who I would be talking to, and chatting with [on topics] without the pseudo-necessary connection of making YouTube videos.

I've only collaborate with my friends so far because they can handle the type of shenanigans I occasionally bring out. I used to collab with other YouTubers, however they don't seem to like my hype over some of the games we play.

Like when we're playing Prop Hunt and I was spotted, I tried running around my enemy, confusing him while shouting things like "You can't catch me!" or "Am I over there? NOPE! I'm behind ya!" and run away and they shouted back telling me to shut up. Those are the type of people I can't collaborate with since we're not gonna go well in the future.

Not to mention, I seemed to be the only one recording the whole game and the others either didn't record, didn't bother editing their videos or just gone inactive. This stops me from collaborating with some other YouTubers and just stick to friends who love me for who I am and can deal with my energetic self.

Exactly, the moment you throw yourself into a video with a stranger, it can only go so far based on what little you know from each other. Hopefully in time, gather people based on personality time will be easier. Even though a lot of starters for YouTube don't know how to classify themselves

And I understand that fully. Putting on an act would get tiring if you're not true friends with someone. Of course some people have the innate ability to work with others, it can be tiresome/unproductive since it's so random.

That's another point, being able to understand when someone is joking, and not taking it seriously. It'd be lame to restrict yourself, people can tell the discomfort from a mile away.

And ouch. That'd leave a bad impact on wanting to talk at all. Understanding your friends and partners will lead to a lot of compromises, or hopefully, a great mesh of togetherness ^^

I don't mind having footage to host on my own channel. Except that ruins a partial of collaborating in the first place, advertising on both platforms. I'd advise anyone working together in the future, to be very descriptive of what they have in mind for recording sessions.

I dont really collaborate with people, im just not that comfortable talking to people... So if i collaborate it is likely to be with someone i know really well in person.

I prefer an indirect way of collaborating... i dont like to be put on the spot... my brain has a meltdown...

Im kinda an introvert...

I tend to work with my friends. I've been doing this for four years. My friend Euan has studying script writing and acting for at least two. My friend ross is a college student studying photography so he can help us get special permission to film in places and my other friend zoey does professional horror movie make up so she can help us with that. So I can just use my friends to work on projects with. Quite handy actually XD

Everyone has their own specifics, and your videos definitely come out a lot better when you feel the most comfortable ^^

Personally, I can work with some people and have fun, but restricting someone is the worst. When you find people you mesh with perfectly, it's awesome :p

I'd say that's more than handy, hah. Connections can go far, and if they're friends, even greater ^^

Yeah but me annd my friend have started working on a new project and since it involves a lot of acting and scripting we've decided to audition out friends and be brutally honest if they don't get the part. I'm gonna have to get him to tell them XD

Well, you can't have someone lower the entire quality of the film, heh. If it's a funny part, you could get away with it easier using someone that isn't ideal for acting :p

Yeah my friend wants to make a movie that's on purposely armature at some point. Like using ketchup for blood and stuff. To try and make it comedic. I'm not sure how I feel on the idea but I might give it a go.

In theory, anything can work out, application is the hardest because we don't always have the right vision at the time, heh.

I did my first collab like a week ago, luckily was my friend, but before I make sure that our personalities match and we did not look like a robot in front of the camera, by skyping 1 or twice and see how each other behave with the camera on :)

Monotone voices are definitely something to look out for, unless your partner can sound hilarious monotone, heh. Friends usually make great appearances on shows for the fun factor and connectivity. From all the responses, I feel that the consensus is, that people should talk a little, before even considering making videos together ^^
