You might be wondering, how is such a well calculated metric invalid?

If you have used YouTube, you know about the subscription system. Come across somebody, want to support them and continue watching their videos, click the subscribe button and there you go +1..
And yes, we have used this for the last few years to see who is better when it comes to YouTube channels, but does it really mean you are better?

Well let me go to the beginning. Lets say everybody was at 0 Subs, time went on and let's say the lead is Pewdiepie with 100000 Subs, Markiplier is on 75000 and me with only 10000 Subs. (Theoretically) People would say Pewdiepie is winning. But what if all my Subs are fully active. so I get 10000 views per video. but Markiplier only gets 60000 views per video and Pewdiepie get 50000 views per video. This would mean that Markiplier has more Active Subs than Pewdiepie.

In Summary: The Subscriber count is false, your average amount of views is your average active Subs.

So, let's compare the results on what is, and what should be the subscription list.

Top 5 Channels (Subs) Currently: [Ignoring YouTube Specific or VEVO]
Pewdiepie - 47,373,403
HolaSoyGerman - 28,979,317
Smosh - 22,347,842
elrubiusOMG - 20,120,605
VanossGaming - 18,352,925

These channels do not get that many views per video,
therefore not all of their Subs must be active, or active accounts!?
So let's use their average views per video as the metric to compare the Active amount of people.

Top 5 Channels (Active Subs) Logically: [Ignoring YouTube Specific or VEVO]
HolaSoyGerman - 21,364,023
elrubiusOMG - 7,825,817
VanossGaming - 6,327,269
Pewdiepie - 4,589,585
Smosh - 1,589,712

Now those lists have changed, and that is a more logical way of looking at it.. Because that is looking at your success, not a simple click and *poof*.

Do remember that views cannot be counted as legit either in real terms. So who is better at YouTube. Nobody, because every god damn metric on YouTube is flawed.

You raised some very good points there. One issue with it though is what would you class as an active sub?? Would these people that leave comments on most of the videos or those who frequently visit the channel, the whole idea of an active sub is open to interpretation.

As you said views can not be counted in real terms as a metric, though disappointingly these are used in Youtubes metric to determine who gets more attention given to them.

Well with the possibility that you can watch a video more than once, you can't determine properly with views. Not everyone comments so you can't with that. Likes and Dislikes the same. In general, you just can't say one is better than another.

Again all good points, I have to say I completely agree with you that the system behind Youtube is flawed. Both with their focus on subscribers their focus on the amount of views people get, and how they use this information to influence what people see in recommended channels. Each channel has their own merits and they should be looked at as separate entities not as a collective whole

So in summary, YouTube is broken and every channel is good in it's own way..

I totally had to agree with this. that's what I always tell to people. don't try to get more subs. but try to get more active fans
