Subs come with time and effort, so I wouldn't worry about that. I think what you mean is are there any games trending. And really, that's a difficult question to answer. Let's take Five Nights at Freddy's, for example. The game came outta nowhere, spread nearly exclusively by word of mouth, and got super popular. Okay, spread mostly by the incessant screeching of Markiplier (who I love following), but that's neither here nor there. One has to ask if the game got popular because of Mark, if Mark got popular because of the game, or a little of both.
That said, I would start by going through Steam's free to play list. There are a lot, actually (in excess of a hundred if I remember correctly). Even if you don't want to go that route, there are so many free games on Newgrounds and a LOT of other sites that you can access quickly and easily. I guess the real question is what exactly do you want to play? If you want to play mostly RPGs, it might not hurt to browse an RPG Maker forum, for example. You may even be able to shed some light on a struggling RPG Maker developer who has released something for free to help promote another game he's working on that he intends to be a paid title.
The possibilities are endless, but if it feels overwhelming, go the Steam route first and see if you find something you like.
