I use photoshop and the amount of time making the thumbnail depends on a couple of things... -What is the video? -What mood am I in? -Am I in a hurry to finish this or is this a thumbnail for a future video? I usually keep a template for all my different types of thumbnails like my vlog ones...

I guess it's different for different people, just winging it is bad for me because I start to stutter and get side tracked haha

Thanks! I've been working hard not to stutter cos I do tend to stutter quite a bit >.< I get my words mixed up a lot but I guess it's just a confidence thing and one day I'll fully over come it! :) Thank you for the feedback :D
