Could be either a fluctuation in either your monetizable views or your CPM. Youtube Red viewers could possibly be playing a role too if you had less views from those who have it in comparison to before.

I do it for all my subscribers. I highly recommend it. They will appreciate that you've noticed them. If they don't have a discussion page make sure to add a /discussion at the end of their channel URL to access it so you can properly thank them.

Honestly I kind of hit that first snowballing growth point at around 100 subscribers but it's been fairly steady since that point. My best month has been +75 subscribers and my worst month was +18 subscribers. I've still yet to really hit that 2nd snowballing point.

I still feel great about it. However I haven't done anything in over a month because I moved to a new place and have been a bit lazy restarting. I imagine once I do restart sometime soon I'll be back on a normal schedule.

I spent about $900 on a pre-built one 5.5 years ago and it still holds up pretty well to most PC's today. CPU is in the 87th percentile and Graphics card is in the 82nd percentile.
