What makes you stay to watch a video?

Retaining a viewer can be hard when you're starting out. There's a lot to consider when you make a video that everybody can see. What have you observed from your favorite person to watch, how do they keep your attention?

What really hooks me are snippets of charisma and humor. I love seeing a glimpse of someone's unpolished disposition.

It's rare to find someone entertaining from the get-go, but it can be so rewarding getting to know them early on. It reminds me when people say "I used to watch this guy when he had only 100 subs!"

Thanks for your input Phil.

What typically catches your attention? It sound somewhat vague, heh. Everyone has content, but they all have a different effect on people. Targeted audience can do a lot in that regard.
I mostly watch video's from games i play myself as i like to see how someone handles a certain mission of in the case of Final Fantasy XIV does a dungeon or primal. Everyone has a own play style and it is of interest to me how someone does certain things wich in some cases helped me further with certain things.

Okay, so if they are relevant to the games you play. I understand that it can be interesting to see another person's reaction. There's a lot of creators that upload content in that fashion, it sounds like you can find a lot of people to relate to ^^

What makes me stay to watch a video is how humor. I love comedy. However, comedy is not the only thing that youtubers want. If you take the channel RocketJump, for example, they don't focus on comedy but on suspense, action, and fun. Here are a few random tips:

1. Your own personal style. Take leafy for example. He is most well known for making people laugh using satire. He has a style others have not done and now he is the fastest growing youtuber.

2. Know your audience. With style, the viewers will want to keep watching what is interesting to them. One of Jacksepticeye's most viewed videos is about throwing poop off a balcony. This is because his viewers are there for comedy and are childish, so they find things like that humorous.

3. Content. There are people on youtube that may only want comedy, action or may only want to watch gaming. You have to find the content that best suits your channel and then bring that content to life.

4. Quality. The simple things like the mic you use, HD/4k, lighting, no black bars on sides of videos, etc.

Hope these help

Definitely humor, that's why knowing your fan base is vital at times. I understand rocketjump, Freddy Wong is a great guy with a lot of achievements.

Being unique is definitely the key at times, because nobody needs a carbon copy of another youtuber. And we talked about knowing your audience, because not everyone will want the same type of video structure, heh. Many people never realize what content to upload, which sucks to an extent. Some people can find their calling on their first try  Quality definitely helps out a lot of aspects as well.

I appreciate your post Dennis, it's very insightful ^^

Personality mostly. They don't even have to be funny to me (though that is a plus) but they have to show a little personality and enthusiasm.

as long as it's not too wordy boring or out there of course.
It depends on the personality for me, because if they can talk for hours and they engage me, it's fine ^^
Most times the personality hooks me in.... I see myself watching video's more and more while not even looking at the theme anymore but just the maker.
It's funny how important personality is on youtube, a lot of people would kill to some all that personality some people have :p

I love when people can get hyped up without going crazy, it takes a lot to show restraint as well ^^

Ok I am not going to try and cause a Leafy fight here, but #1...
You're very off.
That style of video has been done before. All he did was add the clickbait thumbnails and titles, terrible jokes, and constant "KIiLlL YouRSeLf" "jokes"
It's not satire. It's being an arse.

But same with knowing your audience. Leafy knows his audience is ~14 y/o kids, so he makes videos that anyone else would find insulting, rude, but for that niche that he makes videos for, it works perfectly and keeps them watching every video. He's smarter than he looks, he's simply catering to his "fans"

For content, that is the biggest part. You may have a $1000 microphone and be able to edit like a pro, but if you're camera shy, or just not funny, it won't work. Work on that above all. The biggest example is ellaskins. He's made quality guides on DJing, and even though his videos are 360p, he still has grown to a pretty big channel for that small of a niche.

Knowing your audience is key, and people have their own following depending on how they present themselves. Emulating people that make it big doesn't always work out well, because sometimes they get lucky with the following they have, or they cater to a very specific demographic. Having a personality really works wonders when it comes to getting people watching you ^^
