I was wondering what is everyone's opinion on getting shout outs from other YouTube channels? Do you think it is a good idea and do you think it does help you grow?

It really depends, If I were to participate in a shoutout I would most likely participate in a shoutout series where I see that the channels are actually getting a decent amount of subscribers for the requirements need to enter a shoutout

Shout-outs are only good if the person doing it actually tells their audience what makes the channel he's shouting out appeal to him as both a content creator and a viewer. If someone just make a video shouting out 5 channels in one go without any sort of information regarding why the viewers should go check the channels out, then there's no point of that shout-out.

That being said, if the person who hosts these shout-out series selects the channels based on what they're making on their channel, how good of a quality their channel is and how much effort they put into their videos and then proceeds to list all of them down in their shout-out video, then that's the shout-out you should go apply for.

Not to mention some of the requirements for entering certain shout-out series are ridiculous. Having requirements like being subscribed to the channel and staying active on it basically screams out "I don't care if you guys don't earn that much audience from my shout-outs as long as I benefit from it". In fact, the only requirement I can accept is having a certain sub count and that's fair enough as it can separate a good, potential channel from a bad one. For example, Pewdiepie made a shout-out competition last year and the only requirements that you MUST have before entering is having more than 500 subs, being original in your content and being active on your channel by posting videos frequently.

So overall, my opinion on shout-outs are...it depends. If the person's intention is to get easy views or subs from it, don't bother applying for that. If the person's intention is to actually help the smaller channels, then go for it.

Thanks for the reply, this is very helpful and I do agree with everything you said. Do you know of any good shout out series I should try to get into?

I think shout outs should be based on one person wanting to help out another channel based upon liking their content and wanting to help them grow. As opposed to, say, a shout out for the sake of a shout out.. if that makes sense?
Yep it makes sense and you are right with that.
