As all of us should be aware of, sharing on social media can be the biggest way that a channel can take off. But I find that when you share your own videos, it carries a bit of a stigma. On many focus forums and websites, we YouTubers are seen as "oh, it's that guy who makes videos, whatever".
There is a motto that I run, which applies to all the videos I post, minus those directed at other YouTubers.
"When you share your own content, it's "I want me to be known", but when others share your work it's "others want me to be known". It simply feels better and is more effective to let other people share you if they find you share-worthy.".
Just let that sink it. You cannot deny that (to a small channel) getting shared by someone without having any influence in whether s/he did or not feels much better than running around on forums for a view or two.
Let me show you what happens when other people want you to be noticed.
When someone else share's, they are sharing to their friends, family, and people that might actually like yours (or in this case, my) content.
This proves a fact, it is far more powerful when someone else wants you to be noticed then when you want to be noticed. This video view surge also generate five subscribers.
This isn't to say forum advertising isn't effective at all. You can generate some views through the medium, but it is not nearly as effective as the community sharing you (as evidenced by the above image and statements). If you feel as if forum advertising is going to help get your ball rolling, go ahead, do it. But remember that other people are more effective at getting you noticed than you are.
