I have discussed this with a couple of people in chat and also ran into some of these difficulties myself when I started my channel.
Here are some of the basics on how to improve the look of your channel.
When you start, you may want to add a channel trailer or feature video to your channel that people see when they enter your channel. In order to do this, you must look for the small gear next to the subscribe button, click it and it will bring up a pop-up menu where you can change the setting: 'Customise Layout'. Change this t o yes and then save the changes. When you come out, you will be able to add feature videos etc.
Another useful thing to do is to add sections and playlists to the homepage. When on your channels home page, scroll to the bottom and click the 'Add Section' button. You will be given a choice of content to put in this section in a drop down menu. Choose what you want and then click done.
Another Useful thing to do is to add custom thumbnails to your videos. This makes them more visually appealing and makes it more likley for people to click on them. HOWEVER DO NOT PUT FALSE INFORMATION IN THE THUMBNAIL!!! If you do this you could get a strike on your video and channel.
Here you can also add a description and tags to your video. Click on the video manager and then click on the video you want to edit. You will then be given an overview of your video and on the righthand side, a list of thumbnails that you can use. At the bottom of this list, it will give you the option of adding a customised thumbnail. Here you can upload a picture which represents what is in the video.
At the bottom there is an area to add tags to your video, which will help it appear in search results.
The last thing is seeing your subscribers. This is useful if you want to direct message one or see who has recently subscribed. To do this simply click the subscriber their list private they will not appear on this list.
