Ok so I have to say like you I hate self promoting, other than posting the rare video on the forums here / on Google + pages I really don't do any of that. The best things that you can do to improve your chances to grow are : -
- Collab with other users (which you are doing, this is a good way to increase viewership)
- Make high quality content, don't worry about quantity at the minute always focus on quality first
- Make sure your monopolising on your best videos, find out what your viewers like watching and do more of those styles
- Utilise services such as TubeBuddy / Heartbeat / Tags.io to ensure your using effective YouTube tags
- Create eye catching thumbnails that really stand out and sell the video you just made.

Look all i can say from my own experience is that if your content is good or atleast decent people will end up finding and following your channel. No matter what as a small channel its almost impossible to get recognised and views will remain small for a while. I started around 7 or so months ago and all i have done is upload daily for the first few months and kept improving all the time, i tried finding trends and what people liked to watch in my videos. The key points are to get your tags, channel art, thumbnails and titles for videos to the best possible level this is a huge thing in youtube and goes a long way. I never sub 4 sub thats a big no no and i never self advertise on others channels through comments etc...i have just gone solo on this, to a point its worked but its a long hard road. I hope this helps but remember there is no easy answer that people can give you, its hard work otherwise everyone would do it. Some are very lucky and have mates who promote them but thats not a usual path and kinda defeats the point of gaining your own fans. Goodluck hope this helps.
