Yeah it's very possible! Just very hard work! I have a YouTube friend that started about 2 years ago and currently has 4mil subscribers and 466 million views.

The trend right now is Virtual Reality (VR). YouTube is favoring it over normal videos at the moment and ranking it higher in the search results.
